Wii Fun at your Library

February 11, 2010

Attention all gamers ages 8-12:

On January 29th, we had about 15 kids come to the Southwest Library and play the Wii and board games.  They had a lot of fun bowling, golfing and racing the karts. Don’t forget about the upcoming Wii Fun at the Northside Library on February 17th from 6-8pm.  Join us for Mario Kart, Wii sports, and Wii play.  Over Spring break, we will have another Wii Fun at the Southwest Library. It is on Friday, April 9th from 9:30-11:30. If you have younger brothers or sisters, there is a preschool storytime at 9:30 or 10:30 that they can go to while you’re playing games.  We hope to see you there!

Last Wii Fest of the Summer Session

August 23, 2008

The final Wii Fest of the summer took place on Monday, August 17th. Participants of all ages enjoyed Dance Dance Revolution, Wii Sports, Super Mario Smash Brothers and Guitar Hero. Another couple of boys brought along a game of chess to play while they waited. Wii Sport players competed in golf, tennis, bowling and baseball. A son taught his mother how to bowl on Wii Sport while his grandmother looked on. This time around, there was much less trepidation and much more eagerness as players approached Dance Dance Revolution.  Observers even practiced dancing on the side while they waited for their turn. Scores improved for Guitar Hero as players became more accustomed to the game, and those who had struggled to hit a few right notes just short weeks ago now played through entire songs. Watchers became very involved with Super Mario Smash brothers. The room erupted in cheers after successful slams and whenever anyone was at a momentary loss as to their next move suggestions were shouted out from the sidelines.  Everyone had a good time and participants of all ages are eagerly awaiting the first Fall session Wii Fest on Thursday, September 4th from 6:30-8:30pm at Southwest Library.

Wii Fest for all ages…

August 19, 2008

The intergenerational interaction at the Wii Fests is amazing.  The adults who have been coming in to try the Wii games have been positive about the interaction they see between the teens.  These older adults are honest about not knowing anything about the Wii games, so teens will step in and give instruction and suggestions to the new adult players.  These adults have noticed the teens are fostering a spirit of good will between each other.  Students come in and if they are new to Wii, they can get advise and support, if they are familiar with Wii they are asked “how did you do that” and comments of “Wow” and “Great Job” are heard throughout the room.  The adults have ranged from their late teens to mid-70s.  Older adults are challenging young teens and sometimes, even winning!  The adults have been happy to see so many teens in the library doing something positive.  They have commented about teens who leave the Wii Fest go into the library and come back with books and other materials checked out.  They library is a vibrant place during the WiiFest and the energy the teens bring is contagious.  Teens who venture to the Wii Fest alone are then swept up into the group and invited to play board games with new friends while waiting for their turn on the Wii.  The positive atmosphere in the Wii Fest is exiting!

DDR Gets a Work-Out

August 8, 2008

The WiiFest on July 31st at Southwest featured DDR, SuperSmash Brothers, Wii Sports and Guitar Hero.  While waiting for their turn on the Wii, players enjoyed other games including checkers, Apples to Apples and Mancala. Props go out to the girls who were brave enough to be first playing DDR.  This WiiFest featured some pro-players and also some beginning players. This WiiFest we used a new ticket system for turns and to help players keep score. It worked quite well and a good time was had by all. Don’t forget to come to the next WiiFest on Monday, August 18th from 1-3pm at the Southwest Library!

Guitar Hero and Super Smash Bros. Brawl are still favorites!

July 15, 2008

The last Wii Fest was Friday, July 11th at the Northside Library and it was a great success! We had more than 40 people over the ages of 12 attend.
